Do we really need $1m to raise children in Singapore?

The idea that raising a child in Singapore costs nearly $1 million has sparked intense conversations among young couples and future parents. With rising living costs, expensive education options and growing financial pressure, many people now wonder if starting a family has become something only the wealthy can afford.

But for many parents already raising children, the reality looks very different.

While there is no doubt that childcare, healthcare and education can be expensive, many families continue to prove that building a happy and stable home is still possible without extreme wealth. Across Singapore, parents from different income levels continue to raise children successfully by focusing on practical decisions instead of luxury lifestyles.

One reason the “million-dollar child” idea gained attention is because modern parenting expectations have changed significantly. Premium strollers, expensive enrichment classes, overseas holidays and branded baby products are often marketed as essentials. Social media has also increased pressure on parents to constantly provide the “best” for their children.

However, many experienced parents argue that expensive does not always mean necessary.

Children often care less about price tags than adults imagine. Simple family routines, quality conversations and shared experiences can create stronger memories than costly gadgets or luxury vacations. A family picnic, reading together at night or spending time outdoors may leave a bigger impact than expensive entertainment.

Financial experts also point out that raising a child involves long-term planning rather than having a huge amount of money ready immediately. Many households gradually manage expenses over time through stable income, budgeting and prioritising essential needs over unnecessary spending.

Practical parenting choices can also reduce costs significantly. Buying reliable but affordable baby items, avoiding excessive spending on trendy products and choosing balanced education options can make family life much more manageable financially.

Another important factor is emotional support within the household. Studies continue to show that children benefit greatly from active parental involvement, communication and emotional stability. Time spent together often matters more than costly material items.

Even in challenging situations, many families continue moving forward because of resilience and commitment rather than financial perfection. Parents frequently adapt, make sacrifices and find creative ways to provide meaningful experiences for their children without overspending.

Toward the end of the discussion, many parents agree on one key point: the true value of raising a child cannot be measured only in dollars. Financial preparation is important, but emotional connection, consistency and support are equally essential.

In today’s world, the pressure to create a “perfect” lifestyle can make parenthood feel overwhelming. Yet countless families continue to show that children do not necessarily need luxury to grow up happy, secure and loved. Sometimes, the most valuable thing parents can offer is simply their presence, attention and time.
