BMW has officially revealed its all-new i3 sedan, marking a historic milestone for one of its most enduring model lines while accelerating its next-generation electric vehicle strategy. Unlike the 2013 city car that shared the i3 name, the new i3 is a fully electric sedan designed as the next-generation successor to the iconic BMW 3 Series, making this the first time in the model's 50-year history that it receives a complete all-electric treatment.

Following the blueprint established by the iX3 SUV, the new i3 adopts BMW’s latest technology, platform architecture, and design language. Yet, it maintains its own distinctive identity with styling cues that set it apart from previous 3 Series models. At the front, contour lighting frames the daytime running lights and twin kidney grille design, echoing the legacy of earlier generations while giving the car a wider, more commanding stance. At the rear, signature L-shaped tail lights are horizontally elongated, adding to the sedan’s sporty and athletic look.

The i3 preserves the 3 Series’ reputation as a driver-focused vehicle. Its compact proportions, wide shoulders, and flared wheel arches combine with a ‘2.5-box design’—shorter overhangs and a tapered roofline—to deliver a sleek, agile silhouette. The new electric platform incorporates BMW’s Gen6 eDrive technologies, offering longer-range driving, improved efficiency, and enhanced performance.

Thanks to its aerodynamic design, lighter weight, and sealed underbody, the i3 promises a remarkable WLTP driving range of up to 900km on a full charge, surpassing its SUV counterpart. The 800V platform supports ultra-fast DC charging at 400kW, meaning up to 400km of range can be replenished in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions. Additionally, the sedan features Vehicle-to-Load capabilities, allowing it to provide power to external devices or even contribute to the electricity grid in select markets.

Powering the i3 at launch is the dual-motor 50 xDrive variant, delivering a combined 345kW and 645Nm of torque. While BMW has yet to release official 0–100km/h times, the sedan is expected to accelerate faster than the iX3’s 4.9-second benchmark, emphasizing agility and precise handling over straight-line speed. A suite of four advanced computing units, including the “Heart of Joy,” ensures responsive driving by controlling energy management, braking, steering, and overall vehicle dynamics.

Inside, the i3 introduces BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system with a wide pillar-to-pillar display recessed at the base of the windscreen, centralised driver controls, and a choice of steering wheel designs. Rear passengers benefit from generous legroom thanks to the 2,897mm wheelbase, the longest in 3 Series history. Smart features such as the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and BMW Symbiotic Drive enhance semi-autonomous driving capabilities, allowing subtle steering and braking adjustments while maintaining driver oversight.

Production of the i3 will take place in BMW’s historic Munich plant, which has been upgraded to accommodate the latest electric vehicle production processes. Series production is expected to begin in August 2026, with Singapore deliveries projected in the first quarter of 2027.

With its combination of extended range, high-speed charging, sporty dynamics, and advanced technology, the new BMW i3 sedan positions itself as a landmark model for Singapore’s growing electric vehicle market. For drivers seeking the thrill of the 3 Series in a fully electric package, the i3 represents a major step into the future of luxury EVs.
